Today the PGA of America announced the recipients of the 2016 National Awards and Matt Brown, PGA Head Professional of Highlands Golf Club in Gearhart, Oregon, is the recipient of the 2016 PGA Merchandiser of the Year for Public Facilities. This recognition comes on the heels of Brown receiving the 2014 and 2015 Pacific Northwest PGA Section Merchandiser of the Year Award (Public). Highlands Golf Club is a nine-hole public, executive-style golf course in the coastal town of Gearhart. The year-round, 1,500-square foot golf shop is located in a coastal town of nearly 1,500 people that is surrounded by summer tourist communities. The club has built a strong local following of golfers who enjoy visiting the shop for its great selection, customer service and pricing. With a philosophy of keeping things simple, Brown and his staff manage the pro shop and an active online store, which has led to an overall 40 percent increase in sales since 2008. Brown’s merchandising philosophy is based around the customer—reasonable prices, exceptional customer service, and trusting advice. Among the facilities that Brown has served previously include Oregon’s Astoria Golf & Country Club, Bandon Dunes Golf Resort and Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.
Chuck Milne qualified for the European Tour’s 2016 Senior Open Presented by Rolex. He shot -2 and finished T3 at the qualifier on Monday, July 18 at Montrose Golf Links in the UK, earning one of nine qualifying spots at that event. 37 spots total were available for the championship, to be held July 21-24 at Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland.
Thank you, Doug Hixson, for hosting the OPGA Senior Pro Am today. The golf course was in excellent condition and the greens were rolling pure and true with good speed. We were fortunate enough to have perfect weather conditions that led to some great scoring. Joe Peccia, Beaverton, OR, and Dave Spalding, Rose City GC, both had the low round of the day, shooting 4 under 68. Joe Vaughn, Rose City GC, shot 3 under 69 to take home the low amateur honor. Today we also had 2 HOLE in ONES. Dave Spalding aced hole #6 and Julie Massa made hers on #16. Congratulations to you both on this special accomplishment. Thank you again to all of you who played today for your support of the OPGA. Click here for the results from today.
